THE 51th ANNUAL MEETING OF THE THOMAS HARDY SOCIETY OF JAPAN

The 51th Annual Meeting of the Thomas Hardy Society of Japan was held at Seiryo Women’s College, Kanazawa, Ishikawa Pref. invited by Lecturer Ken-ichi Tsuji on November 1, 2008. Some eighty members throughout Japan participated in it.
I. Welcome Address by Chizuko Mizutani (Prof. at Seiryo Women’s College).
II. Three research papers were read chaired by Yukimitsu Namiki (Assoc.Prof.at Tokyo University of Science)
i. The Rhetoric of Autobiographical Writing in Jude the obscure and Life, by Noriko Asahata (Graduate Student at Osaka University)
ii. Viviette chooses Her Own Winding Road, by Masaki Yamauchi (Instructor at Setsunan University)
iii. "Nature" in The Return of the Native, by Akiko Takahashi (Doctor course student at Tokyo Woman’s University)
III. Two research papers were read chaired by Yukio Kaneko(Prof. at Seinan Gakuin University)
i. The loss of the Center of the World: The community in The Mayor of Casterbridge by Nobuyoshi Karato (Graduate student at Rikkyo University)
ii. Thomas Hardy as a Modernist Writer by Masumichi Kanaya (Ass.Prof. at Doshisha University)
IV. Business Meeting was held chaired by Kyoko Nagamatsu (Prof. at Chuo University).
Prof. Akira Tamai (Osaka University) was elected New President. It was decided that the 52nd Annual Meeting will be convened at Rikkyo University, Tokyo on October 31, 2009 invited by Akihiko Niizuma (Prof. at Rikkyo University)
