THE 52nd ANNUAL MEETING OF THE THOMAS HARDY SOCIETY OF JAPAN

The 52nd Annual Meeting of the Thomas Hardy Society of Japan was held at Rikkyo University, Tokyo invited by Prof. Akihiko Niitsuma on October 31, 2009. Some eighty members throughout Japan participated in it.

 

I. Welcome Address by Kazuhiko Goto (The Head of Department of Letters, College of Arts, Rikkyo     University).

 

II. Two research papers were read chaired by Michiko Seimiya (Prof.at Ibaraki Christian University)

 

 i. Jude the Obscure : reconsidering Jude's tragedy on the basis of Hardy's view of Nature, by Masato

   Torikai (Graduate Student of Kansai University)

 

 ii. The Pain of Animals in Hardy's Novels, by Akemi Yoshida (Lecturer at Kitasato University)

 

III. Two research papers were read chaired by Kiyoto Shiotani (Prof. at Gakushuin University)

 

 i. The Napoleonic Wars for Hardy: The Creation Process of the Dynasts from The Trumpet-Major and the Significance of Its Dramatic Form, by Beniko Imamura (Assistant Prof. at Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University)

 

 ii. 'A Faithful Artist' or 'An ironist'? - Hardy and Postmodernism, by Masumichi Kanaya (Associate

    Prof. at Doshisha University)

 

IV. Business Meeting was held chaired by Kaoruko Sakata (Associate Prof. at Japan Women's           University).

 

   It was announced that the 53rd Annual Meeting will be convened at DoshishaWomen's University,  Kyoto on October 30, 2010 invited by Prof. Makiko Kazama.

 

V. The Symposium "How to Read The Life of Thomas Hardy today", chaired by Hiroyuki Ide (Prof.      Emeritus at Tokyo Metropolitan University)
