CURRENT RESEARCH INTO THOMAS HARDY'S LETTERS
MICHAEL Millgate is now in the process of editing a supplementary volume (Volume 8) of The Collected Letters of Thomas Hardy that has been licensed by the holders of the Hardy copyrights and will be published by the Oxford University Press in the same format as that of the seven original volumes. A fair number of Hardy letters have newly "surfaced" in recent years, and Professor Millgate would be most grateful for information as to the location of any Hardy letters or cards, whether printed or still in manuscript or typescript form, that do not appear in the main chronological sequence of the existing edition or in the "Additional Letters" and "Undated Letters and Fragments" sections of Volume 7. The letters that Hardy sent for publication in newspapers and magazines will be comprehensively represented in Millgate's edition of Thomas Hardy's Public Voice: Essays, Speeches, and Miscellaneous Prose, due out from OUP this fall, but because of the elusiveness of such items, details of any that are not already "in Purdy" will also be gratefully received. Please write to Professor Millgate or e-mail him at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
