THE 49th ANNUAL MEETING OF THE THOMAS HARDY SOCIETY OF JAPAN

The 49th Annual Meeting of the Thomas Hardy Society of Japan at Osaka Gakuin University, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture invited by Prof. Shuji Awano, October 28, 2006. One hundred members throughout Japan participated in it.

 

I. Welcome Address by Prof. Takashi Yoshida (Dean of the Department of Foreign Language, Osaka Gakuin University)

 

IIa. Two research papers were read chaired by Kaoruko Sakata (Ass. Prof. at Kyoto University of Education)

 

 i.  "The Celtic Ideas of Reincarnation in Jude the Obscure", by Keiko Matsui (Doctoral student at Doshisha Women’s College)

 

 ii.  "The education of The Hand of Ethelberta" by Akiko Takahashi (Doctor course student at Tokyo Woman’s Christian University)

 

IIb. Two research papers were read chaired by Takayoshi Miyazaki (Prof. at the University of Tokushima)

 

 i.  "Walking in Egdon Heath" by Masaki Yamauchi (Part-time instructor at Setunan   University)

 

 ii.  "Body and Memory in Thomas Hardy’s The Well-Beloved" by Shumpei Fukuhara  (Lecturer at Tokyo Metropolitan University)

 

 

III. Business Meeting was held chaired by Kyoko Nagamatsu (Prof. at Chuo University).

 

  One hundred members participated in the business meeting. It was decided that the 50th Anniversary Meeting will be convened at Rissho University, on October 27,

2007 invited by Shigeru Fujita (Prof. at Rissho University)

 

IV. Report

 A report of the International Thomas Hardy Conference was read by Suguru Fukasawa (Prof. Emeritus at Chuo University)

 

V. Two research papers were read chaired by Toru Sasaki (Prof. at Kyoto University)

 

 i. "Hardy's Fiction of Frustration: The Mayor of Casterbridge” by Satoshi Nishimura (Ass. Prof. at Aichi Bunkyo University)

 

 ii. "’A Distorted Perspective’: Hardy's anti-Realism in The Dynasts” by Shuji Awano (Prof. at Osaka Gakuin University)

 

 

VI. The Symposium: Title: "Re-rereading Tess of the D’Urbervilles" chaired by Yoshiko Takakuwa (Prof. at Tsuda College)
